Proverbs 19:1 Meaning Better Is the Poor Who Walks

Better is the poor who walks in his integrity than he who is perverse in his lips and is a fool.

What does Proverbs 19:1 mean?

Integrity here is the mind whole and undivided, at one with the love it was created by, even when it appears to have nothing the world calls wealth. Such a mind walks in peace because it is not defending a false self, and that inner unity is worth more than every outward possession fear could accumulate.

The one perverse in speech is the mind twisted by the ego, saying one thing while guilt teaches another, split against itself and calling the split cleverness. That is the only real poverty, a mind at war with what it is. To walk in integrity is simply to stop pretending, and a mind that has stopped pretending is already at rest.

The poor: the undivided mind at one with love, walking in peace though it holds nothing the world calls wealth He that is perverse in his lips: the mind twisted by the ego, saying one thing while guilt teaches another, split against itself and calling the split wisdom

Live Proverbs 19:1 today

  1. Find one place where your words and your life do not match, something small you keep saying but do not actually do. Pick the honest version today, even if it looks less impressive.
  2. With one person, drop the polish. If you do not know, say you do not know. If you are not okay, say that instead of fine.
  3. When the pressure is on at work to say the thing everyone wants to hear, say the true thing plainly and kindly instead. Being easy to read is worth more than being hard to argue with.

Where am I keeping up an act that has started to cost me more than it earns?

Fame and possessions cost more than they pay, and the one who knows when to stop keeps something no one can take. Simplicity turns out to be the richer life.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Do not perform a character you are not, because keeping the act up is heavier than any truth. Be one person, and you will finally be able to rest.

Better one honest day lived plainly than a long life of clever appearances. Clarity inside is worth more than anything arranged on the outside.
