Proverbs 19:29 Meaning Penalties Are Prepared for Scoffers

Penalties are prepared for scoffers, and beatings for the backs of fools.

What does Proverbs 19:29 mean?

The punishments here are not readied by any hand outside the mind. A mind committed to scorn prepares its own sentence, for judgment sent out returns as the expectation of judgment, and the world it then meets is only the mirror of the condemnation it first threw.

Christian Psychology

The punishments here are not readied by any hand outside the mind. A mind committed to scorn prepares its own sentence, for judgment sent out returns as the expectation of judgment, and the world it then meets is only the mirror of the condemnation it first threw. What seems laid up against it was set in motion by its own choice to attack.

The wound falls on the back, the place a mind cannot see, because guilt works unseen until it is looked at directly. To lay down the habit of scorn is to empty the storehouse of consequence, since there is no penalty waiting for a mind that has stopped condemning.

Scorner: the mind fixed in judgment, laying up against itself the sentence it aims at others. Back: the hidden place, where guilt strikes unseen until the mind turns and looks at it.

  1. When you catch yourself mentally sentencing someone today, a driver, a stranger online, a relative, drop the sentence and say nothing in your head at all. See how your own chest feels a minute later.
  2. Pay one person the opposite of what you usually hand them: patience, an easy assumption about their motives, the benefit of the doubt. Watch how differently the exchange goes.
  3. When you are criticized and the urge is to strike back harder, answer only the part that is useful. The sharp reply always lands on you first.

What have I been storing up for other people that is quietly waiting for me?
