Wealth adds many friends, but the poor is separated from his friend.

What does Proverbs 19:4 mean?

Here the mind is shown weighing its worth in what it can display, gathering companions while it feels full and finding itself alone the instant it feels empty. This is the ego's whole economy, love traded for having, closeness measured by supply. What it calls friendship is only agreement to prop up a shared sense of value, and it dissolves the moment there is nothing left to trade.

But the separation between one who has and one who lacks was never real; it is the belief in scarcity casting two figures where there is one Son. When a mind stops pricing itself and its brother, the neighbor it thought it had lost was standing beside it the whole time.

Friends: the alliances the ego forms to shore up its sense of worth, bonds held by exchange rather than by shared innocence Neighbour: the brother the mind has fenced off behind the belief in lack, the one it can rejoin the instant it stops keeping accounts

Live Proverbs 19:4 today

  1. Scroll your phone for two minutes and watch how you measure yourself against what you see. Then put it down and ask whether anything about you actually changed in those two minutes.
  2. Reach out today to someone you have nothing to gain from, the person who cannot help your career or your plans. A plain message asking how they are is enough.
  3. When money or status comes up at a family dinner or a work lunch, keep yourself from mentioning what you have or do not have. See what is left to talk about when you stop keeping score.

Clinging to what we own and to what owning makes us seem is the root of the ache. Loosen the grip and the fear of losing goes with it.
