Proverbs 20:30 Meaning Wounding Blows Cleanse Away Evil

Wounding blows cleanse away evil, and beatings purge the innermost parts.

What does Proverbs 20:30 mean?

The ego teaches that suffering purifies, that a mind must be beaten to be made clean, and it points to the bruise and the welt as proof that pain does holy work. But this is fear speaking, dressing punishment up as healing.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

The ego teaches that suffering purifies, that a mind must be beaten to be made clean, and it points to the bruise and the welt as proof that pain does holy work. But this is fear speaking, dressing punishment up as healing. No wound cleanses anything, because the guilt it claims to scour was never there; the mind was innocent before the blow and remains so after.

The real cleansing asks for no suffering at all. It is the gentle undoing of a belief in guilt, the recognition that nothing needs to be hurt to be forgiven, because the darkness the ego tried to beat away was only a mistaken thought.

Wound: the ego's belief that pain purifies, the injury mistaken for a cleansing when it only deepens the dream of guilt. Stripes: the mind's self-punishment, the blows it deals itself believing suffering makes it clean. Inward parts of the belly: the hidden depths of the mind where guilt is thought to hide, the place the ego strikes at when it should only be forgiven.

  1. When you catch yourself replaying a mistake, say plainly that you have already paid for it, and go do the next ordinary thing instead of serving more sentence.
  2. If someone close to you is already down about something they did, skip the lesson. Make them tea, watch something dumb, let them be a person again.
  3. Under pressure, when you want to punish yourself with no lunch, no break, no sleep until it is fixed, take the break anyway. Working kindly is also working.

Where am I still making myself suffer for something that is already over?

The second arrow is the one you shoot into yourself. Pain happens; the punishing on top of it is optional.

You cannot scrub a mirror clean of a reflection. Nothing needs to be scoured, only clearly seen.

Tao Te Ching

Forcing damages what it meant to improve. What grows, grows by being left in peace, not by being beaten into shape.
