Proverbs 22:16 Meaning Whoever Oppresses the Poor for His Own

Whoever oppresses the poor for his own increase and whoever gives to the rich, both come to poverty.

What does Proverbs 22:16 mean?

To take from those who seem to have less, hoping to gather more for oneself, is to believe that gain can come by loss, and that belief impoverishes the one who holds it. The mind that attacks another to enrich itself is teaching itself that supply is scarce and must be seized, and what it teaches, it learns.

To take from those who seem to have less, hoping to gather more for oneself, is to believe that gain can come by loss, and that belief impoverishes the one who holds it. The mind that attacks another to enrich itself is teaching itself that supply is scarce and must be seized, and what it teaches, it learns. Every such taking widens the sense of lack it was meant to cure.

The want that follows is not a punishment sent from outside but the direct experience of a mind convinced there is not enough. Where love would give and find itself increased, fear grasps and finds itself emptied, because a mind that trades in loss can end in nothing else.

The poor: the seemingly weaker part on which the mind projects its own sense of lack, the one it attacks to feel filled Riches: the imagined security fear tries to build by taking, the fullness it seeks through separation and never finds

  1. Give something small away today without telling anyone, a tip, an hour, a thing you were saving. Then pay attention to whether you feel lighter or poorer.
  2. In a group chat or a meeting, hand the credit to the person who actually did the work, even if it would have been easy to keep. Taking it would have cost you more than you think.
  3. When you feel the urge to grab the last slot, the better seat, the bigger share, let it go once on purpose and watch what happens to the panic underneath it.

Where are you still holding tight to something that holding tight has never once made feel like enough?

The wise give and are not emptied by it. What is handed out freely comes back as fullness, and what is clutched turns to dust in the hand.
