Proverbs 22:18 Meaning For It Is a Pleasant Thing If

For it is a pleasant thing if you keep them within you, if all of them are ready on your lips.

What does Proverbs 22:18 mean?

Truth becomes a joy only when it is held within and lived, not clutched as a possession or displayed for others to admire. When the teaching of love is kept in the mind and allowed to settle there, it changes the one who holds it, and only then does it come naturally to speech.

Christian Psychology

Truth becomes a joy only when it is held within and lived, not clutched as a possession or displayed for others to admire. When the teaching of love is kept in the mind and allowed to settle there, it changes the one who holds it, and only then does it come naturally to speech. The words are pleasant because they have first become real; they rise from a mind that has been comforted rather than from one performing comfort it does not feel.

What is merely memorized stays outside and rings hollow. What is received and kept moves outward on its own, so that the lips speak from fullness, and a healed mind gives its healing simply by being what it has learned.

Lips: the outward voice, which speaks truly only when the mind within has already accepted what it says

Live Proverbs 22:18 today

  1. Keep one good thing you learned today to yourself instead of posting it. Let it sit in you for a day and see what it does when it has nowhere to go but inward.
  2. The next time you want to give someone advice, offer only what you have actually lived. Borrowed wisdom sounds hollow and both of you can hear it.
  3. When you are asked a hard question and you do not have the real answer, say so plainly instead of reaching for something that sounds right. Honesty lands better than polish.

What do you say that you have not yet let change you?

Zen

To know and not to live it is not yet to know. The teaching is in the hands and the walk, not in the memory.

Taoism · Chuang Tzu

The one who has truly tasted it has no need to announce it. What is real in a person comes out in how they move, before they say a word.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Do not talk about your principles. Live them, and let people meet the result rather than the description.
