Proverbs 24:3 Meaning Through Wisdom a House Is Built

Through wisdom a house is built; by understanding it is established;

What does Proverbs 24:3 mean?

The house here is the self a mind puts together, and what it is built from decides whether it can stand. Raised by the ego's cleverness it is a structure of defenses, forever propped against a threat, but framed by the wisdom that comes from love it needs no defending at all.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

The house here is the self a mind puts together, and what it is built from decides whether it can stand. Raised by the ego's cleverness it is a structure of defenses, forever propped against a threat, but framed by the wisdom that comes from love it needs no defending at all. To build with understanding is to let a truer teacher lay the walls, so that what the mind dwells in rests on what is real rather than on fear.

A self established this way is not made secure by effort or by guarding. It simply stands, because it was founded on the one thing that cannot be shaken, and a mind at home in it has nothing left to protect.

CYBERNETICS

Cybernetics

A house is raised by wisdom and held steady by understanding, and a life is built the same way. The walls a person can see, the work and the habits, rest on an unseen structure: the picture he holds of who he is. Get that inner frame right and the outer life stands.

Building is one thing; being established is another. Many put up a life quickly that the first hard wind knocks down. What makes it hold is understanding at the foundation. When the self-image is sound, the whole structure settles and endures.

Live Proverbs 24:3 today

  1. Pick one thing you keep around to prove something about yourself, a title in your email signature, a photo, a story you always tell. Ask yourself what it is defending.
  2. In your next conversation, let someone be right about something small without rushing to correct them. See whether anything of yours actually falls down.
  3. In a meeting where you feel the urge to get your version on record first, wait. If who you are can be dented by one meeting, it was built from the wrong material.

How much of my life is spent holding up something that never needed holding?

Buddhism · the Dhammapada

The one who finds the house builder stops the building. Craving raises the rafters, and seeing that ends the need for the structure.

Tao Te Ching 11

The usefulness of a room is in the empty space, not the clay. A self crammed with defenses has nowhere left to live.

Stoicism · Seneca

He wrote that a mind built on its own understanding needs no fortress, because the things it feared were never in its keeping anyway.
