Proverbs 25:12 Meaning As an Earring of Gold

As an earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover to an obedient ear.

What does Proverbs 25:12 mean?

Correction only adorns a mind that is willing to hear it, and then it becomes something lovely rather than something feared. The ego hears every reproof as accusation and shuts its ears against the wound.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

Correction only adorns a mind that is willing to hear it, and then it becomes something lovely rather than something feared. The ego hears every reproof as accusation and shuts its ears against the wound. But a mind that has laid down its defenses receives correction as a jewel, because it wants the error undone more than it wants to be right.

The gold ornament is the beauty that truth adds to a mind ready for it. Nothing is taken from such a mind and nothing is condemned; the reproof simply shows it where it chose fear, and the willingness to listen turns that showing into grace. What looks like a rebuke is, to the open ear, a gift it gladly wears.

Earring of gold: the beauty that loving correction adds to a mind, precious rather than punishing Obedient ear: the part of the mind that has set down its defenses and welcomes being gently set right

  1. Think of one piece of feedback you brushed off this month. Sit with it for five minutes and look for the part that was fair, without defending yourself to the empty room.
  2. When someone close to you says something that stings and might be accurate, try saying thank you before you say anything else. Then ask them to tell you more.
  3. In a review, a group chat, or a comment on your work, when you feel your chest tighten and your explanation loading, pause and ask one question instead. Being shown an error is cheaper than carrying it.

What would I rather have, to be right, or to stop being wrong?
