Proverbs 26:17 Meaning Like One Who Grabs a Dog’s Ears

Like one who grabs a dog’s ears is one who passes by and meddles in a quarrel not his own.

What does Proverbs 26:17 mean?

A mind that seizes on a quarrel not its own is reaching for something to be angry about, because guilt is restless and would rather find a fight outside than sit with the accusation it feels within. Grasping the ears of a strange dog is the ego's whole method: take hold of conflict, and it turns and bites the one who took hold, for attack always wounds the mind that reaches for it.

The strife that seemed to belong to another was never really out there. Set it down and the teeth find nothing to close on, and the mind is left in the peace it never actually left.

Dog: the borrowed conflict the mind grabs to have an enemy, harmless until seized and turning on whoever takes hold Ears: the handle by which the ego lays claim to a strife not its own, the point where a mind reaches into a fight it was free to pass by

  1. Scroll past the fight today. The thread, the comment section, the argument that has nothing to do with you. Set the phone down and let it carry on without your hands on it.
  2. When two people you know are at odds, stay kind to both and refuse to take the side that is being offered to you. You can care without enlisting.
  3. When a tense exchange at work is not actually about you, answer only what concerns your part. Every extra sentence is a hand reaching for the ears.

Whose fight am I holding on to, and what did I think it would get me?

Some things are yours to handle and some are not. Reaching into what was never yours is how you hand away your own peace.

Tao Te Ching 22

The one who does not contend has no one to fight. A quarrel needs a second hand before it becomes a quarrel.

Buddhism

Holding on to anger to throw at someone is like picking up a hot coal. The burn arrives long before the throw does.
