Proverbs 26:4 Meaning Don’t Answer a Fool According

Don’t answer a fool according to his folly, lest you also be like him.

What does Proverbs 26:4 mean?

When a mind meets an attack and answers it in kind, it steps into the same dream the attacker is dreaming, and the two become mirrors of one fear. To reply to folly with folly is to agree that the accusation was real and worth defending against, and in that agreement the mind loses the very innocence it was trying to protect.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

When a mind meets an attack and answers it in kind, it steps into the same dream the attacker is dreaming, and the two become mirrors of one fear. To reply to folly with folly is to agree that the accusation was real and worth defending against, and in that agreement the mind loses the very innocence it was trying to protect.

The correction is not to prove the other wrong but to refuse the whole argument fear proposes. A mind that does not take up the quarrel stays with its own teacher, and by declining to descend into the attack, it keeps the peace that no defense could have won for it.

Folly: the logic of fear that invites the mind to answer attack with attack, the shared dream that makes two minds one in error.

  1. When a notification pulls you toward a reply you can feel heating up, type it somewhere else and do not send it. Often that is the whole of what you needed.
  2. If a group chat starts pulling a person apart, you can stay quiet without taking sides. Not adding a line is a real answer.
  3. When someone comes at you sharply in a meeting or at a dinner table, answer the question and leave the tone alone. You do not have to match the volume to be heard.

What am I defending that was never actually under threat?

The skilled one does not quarrel. Meeting force with force only makes you a second copy of what you were resisting.

When someone acts badly toward you, the harm is in your reaction, not in their words. Take up their anger and you have taken up their problem.
