CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

Correction from love is not punishment but a firm and honest word that shows a wandering thought where it has strayed into fear. What guides and what confronts are gifts, for they call the mind back to truth instead of letting it drift unquestioned.

The undisciplined thought, left to follow every fearful impulse with no gentler voice to answer it, brings distress to the deeper self that gave it life. A thought no one lovingly corrects will teach the whole mind to suffer, not from wickedness but from abandonment.

Rod: the firm guiding influence in the mind, correction offered by love rather than by fear Child: the untrained thought or impulse that follows fear when no gentler teacher guides it Mother: the deeper self that gives rise to thought, which suffers when its thoughts run unattended

The rod is the spine and the discipline of drawing energy upward through it, and wisdom comes as that current rises and steadies the mind rather than letting it drain into appetite. This is the reading the church buries when it seizes the same words as scripture for the beating stick and the fear of hell; the real correction is inward, the lifting of the spinal fire. A mind abandoned to itself, running loose down into the senses with no such discipline, cannot rise, and so it shames the spirit that gave it life.

The mother is the spirit within, the source the mind is meant to lift toward, and an untrained mind left to wander and dissipate never climbs back to her but leaves that inner spirit unhonored.

Rod: the spine, the channel along which spiritual energy is raised by discipline to bring the mind to wisdom Mother: the spirit within, the higher source the mind rises toward or, left untrained, disgraces Child: the mind in its open state, which either lifts by discipline or scatters when left to itself

Live Proverbs 29:15 today

  1. When a habit you are not proud of shows up again today, name it honestly to yourself without the pile-on. Honest and kind at the same time is the skill.
  2. Ask one person you trust what they think you are getting wrong lately, and then just listen without explaining yourself.
  3. The next time you feel a reaction rising at work, treat it like a kid tugging your sleeve. Acknowledge it, do not hand it the microphone.

Where have I let something in myself run unchecked because correcting it felt unkind?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Epictetus

A friend who tells you the truth about yourself is worth more than one who only agrees. Training is uncomfortable and it is still a gift.

Confucius · Analects

When you see a fault in yourself, meet it squarely rather than covering it. The one who hides it from himself stays stuck with it.

Buddhism

Leave the mind untended and it follows every passing impulse like an animal with no fence. Guiding it gently is not harshness, it is care.
