Proverbs 29:26 Meaning Many Seek the Ruler’s Favor

Many seek the ruler’s favor, but a man’s justice comes from Yahweh.

What does Proverbs 29:26 mean?

The mind is forever seeking approval from some authority outside itself, sure that a favorable word from the one in power will settle what it is worth. Every such appeal is the ego looking away from its own Source, hoping a ruler, a judgment, an outside verdict can grant the peace that only comes from within.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

The mind is forever seeking approval from some authority outside itself, sure that a favorable word from the one in power will settle what it is worth. Every such appeal is the ego looking away from its own Source, hoping a ruler, a judgment, an outside verdict can grant the peace that only comes from within.

But what a mind truly is was never in another's gift to bestow. Its value is settled already by the Love that created it, and the endless courting of favor ends the moment it remembers that the only judgment that matters was made in its favor long ago.

Ruler: the outer authority the mind courts to learn its worth, the substitute the ego seeks in place of the Source that already holds its value

Live Proverbs 29:26 today

  1. When you post something or send a message and then keep checking for a reply, put the phone face down for a stretch and let the silence mean nothing. Your sense of yourself was not waiting in that notification.
  2. In one conversation today, listen to someone without steering them toward liking you. No hint, no joke fishing for a laugh, just being with them.
  3. In a meeting or a review where you want the boss's nod, say the honest thing in a calm voice, then let the room react however it reacts. You already know whether it was true.

What would I say differently today if no one's approval were on the table?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching

The sage does not chase honors or fear disgrace, because both are handed out by others and can be taken back the same way. What is already whole needs no one's nod.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

He reminded himself how little the opinions of powerful men actually touch him, and how strange it is to want something from people whose own minds are in disorder. Your worth sits in your own ruling faculty, not in their verdict.

Zen

A student kept bringing his work to the teacher for approval until the teacher asked who was looking before he arrived. The answer was never in the teacher's hand.
