Proverbs 3:24 Meaning When You Lie Down

When you lie down, you will not be afraid. Yes, you will lie down, and your sleep will be sweet.

What does Proverbs 3:24 mean?

The deepest test of a mind's peace comes in the hours when it cannot defend itself, when the body is laid down and the ego's watchfulness must cease. Fear turns rest into vigil, keeping the mind braced against a darkness it half expects to attack.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

The deepest test of a mind's peace comes in the hours when it cannot defend itself, when the body is laid down and the ego's watchfulness must cease. Fear turns rest into vigil, keeping the mind braced against a darkness it half expects to attack. Love turns the same hour into release, letting the mind lie down because it has nothing left to guard against.

Sweet sleep is the natural rest of a mind that has forgiven and been forgiven, no longer holding a grievance close enough to disturb its dreams.

Lying down: the mind's letting go of its defenses, the surrender fear makes fearful and love makes safe Sleep: the mind's deep rest, made sweet when it has released its grievances and has nothing it feels it must guard against

  1. When you get into bed, put the phone across the room instead of beside you. The scroll is a kind of watchfulness, a last check that nothing is coming for you, and the night goes softer when you decide you do not need to keep watch.
  2. If there is someone you are quietly annoyed at, text them something ordinary and kind before the day ends, or simply decide inside yourself that you are done carrying it. You are not settling the argument, you are setting down the thing that would have kept you half awake.
  3. On a hard day, when the email or the meeting is still running in your head at eleven at night, say out loud that it will still be there tomorrow and you will meet it then. Then let your shoulders drop and let the room be dark.

What am I still guarding tonight that cannot actually be protected by staying awake?

Tao Te Ching

Water does not fight the rocks it passes. The mind that stops resisting what the night brings rests more deeply than the mind standing guard over it.

The one who has set down resentment sleeps well. Holding a grudge is holding a weight, and the arm that holds it cannot relax.

End the day by looking honestly at it and then releasing it. What is finished cannot be argued with, and arguing with it in the dark costs you the only rest you had.
