Proverbs 3:29 Meaning Don’t Devise Evil Against Your Neighbor

Don’t devise evil against your neighbor, since he dwells securely by you.

What does Proverbs 3:29 mean?

To plot harm against one who trusts you is the ego's attack in its purest form, guilt turned outward against the very nearness that offered peace. The mind that schemes against a trusting neighbor is trying to lay its own guilt on someone who came close without defense, and the closeness that should have healed becomes the target of fear.

Christian Psychology

To plot harm against one who trusts you is the ego's attack in its purest form, guilt turned outward against the very nearness that offered peace. The mind that schemes against a trusting neighbor is trying to lay its own guilt on someone who came close without defense, and the closeness that should have healed becomes the target of fear. Yet the harm devised returns to its author, for the attack a mind imagines is the attack it comes to feel.

The one dwelling securely beside the mind is a brother met without a wall between, and such a meeting is an invitation to remember innocence. To answer it with plotting is to refuse the healing offered. To answer it with peace is to find that the trust was safe, and so was the mind that received it.

  1. If someone trusted you with something private and you have been quietly turning it over against them, catch that in yourself tonight and let it drop before you sleep. Nothing needs to be said out loud, just put the weapon down.
  2. When a friend texts you something unguarded, answer the person, not the opening. You have the choice to be the safe place they already assumed you were.
  3. In the meeting where a colleague admits they are struggling, resist using it later. The moment where you could gain something by their openness is the moment to protect it instead.

Who has left a door open to you, and what have you been doing on the other side of it?

Hatred is never ended by hatred, only by its absence. The hostile thought you keep is the one that shapes you, whatever it does to the other person.

Meet what is soft and open with softness, and nothing breaks. Hardness aimed at the undefended only hardens the one who aims it.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

The harm is not in what another does to you, but in the state your own mind takes on. A mind set on revenge has already lost the peace it wanted to protect.
