Proverbs 4:1 Meaning Listen

Listen, sons, to a father’s instruction. Pay attention and know understanding;

What does Proverbs 4:1 mean?

The father is the right hemisphere of the brain, the intuitive and receiving side that instructs, and the children are the offspring thoughts of the carnal mind and the emotions it breeds. Calling them to hear is the higher intuitive faculty addressing its own restless, feeling-born progeny, drawing the lower stream of thought toward understanding.

Esoteric

The father is the right hemisphere of the brain, the intuitive and receiving side that instructs, and the children are the offspring thoughts of the carnal mind and the emotions it breeds. Calling them to hear is the higher intuitive faculty addressing its own restless, feeling-born progeny, drawing the lower stream of thought toward understanding. The instruction moves inward from the receiving side of the brain toward the scattered mental children that need it.

What this pictures is one region of a person teaching another: the intuitive hemisphere speaking to the thoughts thrown up by desire and emotion, so that understanding can gather where feeling once ruled. The calmer, receiving side calls the busy offspring of the lower mind to attend.

Live Proverbs 4:1 today

  1. When you catch yourself spiraling in thought today, speak to yourself the way a patient person would, out loud if you are alone. The calm voice is yours too, it just talks less.
  2. With someone upset, be the slower one in the room. Your steadiness does more than any advice you could offer them.
  3. In a heated group chat or thread, write what you want to say, read it back once as the calmer part of you, then decide. Most of what the feelings want to send does not survive that one read.

Which part of you has been doing all the talking lately, and which part has not been listened to?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

He speaks to himself on paper, the steady part of him instructing the part that is angry and afraid. One region of a person teaching another is the whole practice.

Buddhism

The mind is trained the way a wild animal is gentled, by patient calling rather than force. The quiet part of you calls the restless part again and again until it comes.

Tao Te Ching 16

Return to stillness and the agitated movements settle on their own. The calm does not fight the noise, it outlasts it.
