Proverbs 4:16 Meaning For They Don’t Sleep Unless They Do

For they don’t sleep unless they do evil. Their sleep is taken away, unless they make someone fall.

What does Proverbs 4:16 mean?

This is the restlessness of the ego itself, which cannot be at peace while anyone is seen as innocent. Guilt in the mind hungers to prove itself by finding fault outside, and it is quiet only after it has cast blame or watched another stumble, because attack is the one thing that seems to justify its own existence.

This is the restlessness of the ego itself, which cannot be at peace while anyone is seen as innocent. Guilt in the mind hungers to prove itself by finding fault outside, and it is quiet only after it has cast blame or watched another stumble, because attack is the one thing that seems to justify its own existence.

Such a mind is never truly resting; it is always at work manufacturing enemies, since to stop would be to let the accusation dissolve. Understand this and the ego loses its grip, for a mind that sees how fear feeds on judgment is already free to set the judgment down.

  1. Catch yourself tonight when you cannot sleep because you are drafting a reply to someone. See the restlessness for what it is, then let the draft go unfinished.
  2. When you feel the pull to tell someone about the person who annoyed you, skip it. Say something true about your own day instead.
  3. If you feel a small flicker of satisfaction when a difficult coworker slips up, let it pass without feeding it. That little hunger is not actually on your side.

Those who grasp are never satisfied, and the striving itself is what keeps them from rest. The hunger does not end by being fed.

Aversion is named as one of the roots of suffering, a fire that must be kept burning with fresh fuel. It cannot rest, because resting would let it go out.

Stoicism · Seneca

He observed that anger makes a person its servant, always busy, never at peace. The angry mind works hard and gets nothing.
