CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY
Everything a mind will ever meet begins in the mind itself. What is guarded here is not a feeling but the seat of decision, the quiet place where fear or love is chosen before a single event appears. The world the mind then walks through is only that choice made visible, so to watch the heart is to watch which teacher is being welcomed at the source.
Diligence means catching the choice while it is still a thought. A mind that keeps its heart is simply a mind that decides, again and again, to let love rather than guilt be the cause from which its whole experience flows.
Heart: the deciding center of the mind, the source from which the world is chosen before it is seen, the point where love or fear is first admitted.

EGO & BEING
The heart here is not sentiment. It is the inner state you live from, the quality of consciousness beneath your thoughts and moods. Guard it, because everything you experience flows out of it. The same events meet a person at peace and a person in turmoil, and each lives an entirely different life from them.
So the real work is inward. Not the frantic managing of circumstances, but the tending of the ground they spring from. When you keep watch over your inner state and stay present rather than lost in reaction, your outer life is shaped by that presence, because what you meet the world with is what the world becomes for you.

PSYCHOANALYSIS
The heart here means the hidden center of a person, the deep source below the surface of daily thoughts. Guard it carefully, the saying goes, because everything that becomes your life first rises from there.
We like to think our lives are shaped by what we decide out loud. In truth the current runs the other way. What lives quietly in the depths, our real longings, wounds, and drives, is what actually flows outward into how we act and who we become. So tending that inner ground is not a soft luxury. It is the most practical care there is, because the whole of your outward life keeps springing from that one inner well.

BUDDHISM
Citta: The heart-mind Citta is the heart-mind, where thought and feeling are born. This is the "heart" you are asked to keep, the inner ground under every mood, wish, and choice you make. Whatever you let take root here is what your hands go on to plant out in the world, so tend it the way a careful gardener tends the soil before ever thinking about the fruit.
Manopubbaṅgama: Mind goes first Manopubbaṅgama names the mind as the forerunner that runs ahead of all things. The "issues of life" are outflowings, springs rising from one hidden source, and that source is the heart, already moving before a single word or deed steps into the open. Picture a cart rolling behind the ox that pulls it: wherever the heart turns first, the whole weight of your life follows down the same track. Guard what leads, and you have some say over where you end up.
Cetanā: Intention Cetanā is intention, the choosing that sits behind every act before it moves. It is the water at the wellspring, for what flows out of the heart as the "issues of life" is first willed quietly within, and that willing hardens into your deeds and the fruit they carry. Keep the source clean and the whole stream runs clear; let it sour at the head, and everyone downstream tastes it.
Sati: Guarding mindfulness Sati is the watchful awareness that stands over the heart. "Keep thy heart" is its whole task, for to keep is to guard, and sati is the gatekeeper who meets each thought at the door and knows whether to let it in or turn it away. A thought caught at the threshold is easy to turn back; the same thought, once it has moved in and settled, is hard to send out again. Post this watchman at the gate and nothing slips into the heart, or out of it, unseen.
Appamāda: Heedful diligence Appamāda is heedfulness, the diligence that keeps its eyes open. "With all diligence" is this same quality, a steady care held hour after hour, never quite setting the guard down or trusting the gate to watch itself. It was the Buddha's last counsel to his students, and it fits the wellspring, since a source left alone silts up long before you notice the water has gone bad.

CYBERNETICS
The heart works like a wellspring, and every stream in a life runs from it. A tended source keeps its water clean, while an untended one lets whatever falls in flow back out into the days. What a person carries at the center never stays private. It shapes the life around him.
The pictures a man keeps of himself settle in that inner place and quietly steer his choices, his moods, his reach. Careless thoughts about his own worth do not stay put; they leak into everything he attempts. When a person tends the inner picture with the same care he would give a spring he drank from daily, the whole current of his life clears. Life flows outward from what is guarded within.

SUFISM
Everything a person does rises first as water rises in a spring, so a poisoned source poisons the whole stream downhill: the hidden envy, the private grudge, the appetite fed in secret. The cure is watchfulness turned inward, guarding the source itself, cleaning the spring rather than fighting the muddy water far below.
That spring is not the self's own invention. Life wells up through the heart from a deeper source that never runs dry, and God is the hidden water rising there. To keep the heart is to keep the channel clear enough for that living stream to come through unclouded.

SELF-HELP
What a person admits becomes belief, belief sets the state, the state sets the emotion, and the emotion drives the actions that compound into a destiny. Every link downstream costs more to move, so the gate carries the leverage. Attention behaves like a supply line: whatever it feeds grows in size and in feeling, and whatever stays out of frame effectively does not exist.
Guarding is therefore a daily act of deletion, choosing what gets no supply at all. Leave the gate open and a person spends decades managing outcomes built from material they never chose to let in.
Christian Psychology lens
What am I letting in at the source, before I even know I have chosen it?
Mind comes first, and everything follows from it. Speak or act from a settled mind and peace follows like a shadow that never leaves.
Dogen taught that practice is not a means to an awakening that comes later. The care given to this moment is already the whole of it.
The soul takes the color of its thoughts. Dye it well, because the life you live will come out in that color.
