Proverbs 4:7 Meaning Wisdom Is Supreme

Wisdom is supreme. Get wisdom. Yes, though it costs all your possessions, get understanding.

What does Proverbs 4:7 mean?

The ego is forever gathering, sure that safety lies in one more thing acquired, one more defense against a threatening world. Set against all that getting is the one acquisition that matters, the willingness to see with love, which the mind reaches not by adding but by letting go of fear.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

The ego is forever gathering, sure that safety lies in one more thing acquired, one more defense against a threatening world. Set against all that getting is the one acquisition that matters, the willingness to see with love, which the mind reaches not by adding but by letting go of fear. Wisdom is called the principal thing because every other pursuit leaves the mind still frightened, while this one alone quiets it.

Whatever else a mind spends itself chasing, the single thing worth having is the corrected sight that shows it there was never anything to defend against.

BUDDHISM

Buddhism

Paññā: Wisdom Paññā is clear seeing into the way things are. Set it at the very top of all you could gather, since good conduct only steadies your footing and a settled mind only steadies your gaze, while this is the blade that does the cutting. Call it the principal thing because every other prize you carry home wears out or slips your grip; clear sight is the one that never leaves you. Everything else you own asks to be guarded, and this alone stands guard over you.

Avijjā: Ignorance Avijjā is the not-knowing at the root of all our trouble. Wisdom ranks first to get because this ranks first among the things wrong with us: lost in fog, you keep circling back to the same ditch, worn out and no nearer home. So reach for it ahead of every other purchase, since it alone clears the confusion that keeps sending you in circles.

Yoniso manasikāra: Wise attention Yoniso manasikāra is attention aimed at the root of a thing. Here the getting begins, for wisdom is not sold over any counter: you earn it by where you point your mind. Aim it steadily at how a feeling climbs, crests, and fades, and understanding soaks in on its own, the way slow rain works down into dry, cracked ground.

Dhamma-vicaya: Investigation Dhamma-vicaya is the mind sifting experience to tell one state from another. Turn "with all thy getting" inward on your own life: you weigh each mood and thought as it arrives, the way a shopper presses every piece of fruit to find the sound one. Understanding is gathered by this patient sorting, each thing lifted, named, and set apart from the next.

Vijjā: True knowing Vijjā is the clear knowing that ends not-knowing. This is the understanding you reach at last, when the fog lifts and the road you were fumbling along lies open in front of you. "Get understanding" points right here: the darkness burned off, each thing standing out plain, so the same ditch never snags your foot twice. So the last thing you get by all this getting is the sight that nothing stays to be kept.

CYBERNETICS

Cybernetics

Of everything a person can gather, one acquisition ranks above the rest, because it governs how all the others get used. A man can pile up money, skill, and applause and still steer his life into the ditch if the picture he carries of himself is warped. Wisdom is the corrected picture, the accurate map of who he is and what he was built to do. Once that map is right, every other gain finds its proper place.

Understanding goes one layer deeper. It grasps the mechanism, why the mind moves toward whatever image it holds as fact. When someone sees this, his striving stops fighting itself. The picture leads, and the man follows it home.

Live Proverbs 4:7 today

  1. Put one thing in your cart today and then leave it there. Sit for a minute with the restlessness and see that it was never about the thing.
  2. When a friend mentions something they just bought and you feel the pull to match it, be glad for them out loud and let it stay theirs. Nothing is missing from your life because something is in theirs.
  3. When you feel the urge to armor up, more savings, more credentials, more proof, ask what you are actually afraid of. Then spend that energy on seeing the day clearly instead.

What am I still trying to acquire in order to feel safe?

There is no greater poverty than wanting more. Knowing you have enough is the only wealth that stays.

Buddhism

Grasping is the ache itself, not the cure for it. Each thing you hold tighter is one more thing to lose.

It is not the person with little who is poor, but the one who craves more. No amount gathered quiets a frightened mind.
