Proverbs 5:14 Meaning I Have Come to the Brink

I have come to the brink of utter ruin, among the gathered assembly.

What does Proverbs 5:14 mean?

A mind can stand surrounded by others and be lost within itself, for the ego's harm is not undone by company. To be almost in all evil is to have followed separation nearly to its limit while appearing, to every eye, to belong.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

A mind can stand surrounded by others and be lost within itself, for the ego's harm is not undone by company. To be almost in all evil is to have followed separation nearly to its limit while appearing, to every eye, to belong. The word almost is the mercy in it; the descent was never complete, and a thought caught before its end can always be released.

What looked like ruin was a choice, and choices can be made again. In the same crowd, with the same life, a mind can turn to love and be wholly changed while nothing outside it moves.

The congregation and assembly: the gathered world of others, among whom a mind can still be alone with its guilt until it chooses love.

  1. If you have been going through the motions all week, surrounded by people and still somehow alone in your head, say that honestly to yourself on the commute home. Naming it is already the turn.
  2. At dinner or on a call, put the phone out of reach and actually be in the room with the person in front of you. You can be in the same house as someone for years and never arrive.
  3. In the middle of a day that has gotten away from you, the fifth meeting, the full inbox, stop for one breath and choose to be kind in the next exchange. Nothing around you has to change for that to be real.

Where am I surrounded by people and still carrying something alone?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

He wrote that people look for retreats by the sea or in the mountains when they can withdraw into themselves at any hour. A crowd changes nothing about where your mind actually lives.

Buddhism · Dhammapada

Your own mind does you more harm than any enemy, and more good than any friend. No company can fix what you are doing to yourself in private.

Taoism · Chuang Tzu

He described a man who ran from his own shadow and died exhausted, never thinking to step into the shade. The escape was always available and never outside.
