Proverbs 6:13 Meaning Who Winks with His Eyes

who winks with his eyes, who signals with his feet, who motions with his fingers,

What does Proverbs 6:13 mean?

A mind ruled by fear cannot speak plainly, so it signals sideways: a flicker of the eye, a shuffle of the foot, a sign made with the hand. These are the small hidden gestures of guilt, which never trusts the open word and prefers the coded hint, because it is always arranging attack while wishing to seem innocent of it.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

A mind ruled by fear cannot speak plainly, so it signals sideways: a flicker of the eye, a shuffle of the foot, a sign made with the hand. These are the small hidden gestures of guilt, which never trusts the open word and prefers the coded hint, because it is always arranging attack while wishing to seem innocent of it.

Such a figure is the mind watching its own secrecy played back to it. When the hidden signaling is recognized as fear rehearsing itself, there is nothing left to decode, and the eyes may open on a brother who was never plotting at all.

Eyes: the mind's perception narrowed to a covert signal, sight enlisted in concealment rather than open seeing Feet: the direction the mind is walking, its chosen movement toward attack disguised as ordinary steps Fingers: the hidden instruction of the ego, guilt teaching through signs what it will not say aloud

  1. Today, instead of the sigh, the delayed reply, the vague one-word answer, say the actual thing in one plain sentence. Even to yourself first, just to hear it.
  2. If you are upset with someone, tell them directly and gently rather than letting them figure it out from your tone. The coded version costs both of you a whole day.
  3. When you are about to send a message with a layer underneath it, the kind that looks fine but is meant to land, delete it and write the honest version. If the honest version cannot be said kindly yet, wait until it can.

Where am I hinting at something I could simply say?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching

It says plain words are not fancy and fancy words are not plain. Straight speech has no need of hints, and hints usually mean something is being hidden.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

He said a straightforward and good person should be obvious, the way someone with a strong smell is known the moment they walk in. Nothing coded, nothing arranged.

Buddhism

Right speech asks for words that are true, kind, and timely. The sideways comment that lets you deny you ever said it fails all three.
