Proverbs 9:17 · World English Bible
“Stolen water is sweet. Food eaten in secret is pleasant.”
The ego's whole appeal is that satisfaction must be stolen and hidden, taken from someone and kept out of sight. Waters taste sweet because they were seized, bread pleasant because it was eaten in secret; the pleasure and the guilt are the same transaction.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY
The ego's whole appeal is that satisfaction must be stolen and hidden, taken from someone and kept out of sight. Waters taste sweet because they were seized, bread pleasant because it was eaten in secret; the pleasure and the guilt are the same transaction.
This is how special love is sold, as a private gain wrung from a world imagined to be scarce. Yet what is taken in secret must be hidden, and what is hidden becomes the guilt the mind then carries. The sweetness the ego promises is the very hook by which it keeps the mind afraid.
Stolen waters: the ego's promise that joy must be seized from another, a pleasure whose taking is already the wound Bread eaten in secret: satisfaction the mind believes it must hide, so that the hiding becomes the guilt it carries

SELF-HELP
What a person has attached sweetness to will decide their direction long before they think they are choosing.
Attach a strong pleasure to something and a person moves toward it before any case has been made, then builds the case afterward to defend a trip already underway. The forbidding does the selling: risk raises the intensity of the state, intensity is what the body scores as value, and the same water tastes better for having been taken.
Nothing about the taste is false, which is why argument loses to it; what is left out is the bill, which arrives after the linkage has already produced years of choices. The work is relinking, attaching real pain to the secrecy and real pleasure to what can be eaten in the open, done before the appetite is loud, because in the moment whatever linkage is already in place wins.
Christian Psychology lens
What am I enjoying that I would not want seen?
Craving grows like a vine. The pleasure it gives is exactly what binds you to wanting it again. The sweetness and the trap are one thing.
The five flavors dull the palate. Chasing after what excites leaves the heart restless and the senses numb.
Seneca wrote that pleasures taken wrongly turn into punishments. What you have to hide has already started costing you.
