Psalms 11:1 Meaning In Yahweh

In Yahweh, I take refuge. How can you say to my soul, “Flee as a bird to your mountain”?

What does Psalms 11:1 mean?

Trust set in the LORD is the settled center of a person, the still point that holds when the surface is shaken. The voices that urge the soul to flee are the fearful reactions inside the mind, and their counsel is flight: scatter upward, take wing, hide in the high places.

Trust set in the LORD is the settled center of a person, the still point that holds when the surface is shaken. The voices that urge the soul to flee are the fearful reactions inside the mind, and their counsel is flight: scatter upward, take wing, hide in the high places. A bird is the restless thought that never lands, always startling and lifting off at the first alarm, and the mountain is the cold height of pride and isolation where a frightened self imagines it is safe.

To answer these voices with trust is to refuse the panic that would send consciousness up and away from its own ground. The centered self does not run to a far peak. It stays, rooted in the one source within, while the anxious thoughts wheel and cry and find no rest.

Live Psalms 11:1 today

  1. When your mind starts running the worst case story today, say out loud what is actually true right now. Stay with what is in front of you instead of taking off with the fear.
  2. If you are tempted to go quiet on someone because things got uncomfortable, send the message anyway. Withdrawing feels safe and leaves you alone on a cold hill.
  3. When bad news lands in the middle of your day, keep your feet where they are for one slow breath before you react. You can decide something from steadiness rather than from flight.

Where are you about to run when staying put is what the moment actually asks of you?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching 16

The one who returns to the root stays steady while everything on the surface rushes about. Stillness is a place to stand, not a place to hide.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

You can withdraw into yourself at any moment, and nowhere is quieter or more your own. No mountain retreat is needed for that.

Buddhism

The untrained mind is likened to a monkey leaping from branch to branch, never resting. Training is simply teaching it to sit still where it already is.
