Psalms 120:2 Meaning Deliver My Soul

Deliver my soul, Yahweh, from lying lips, from a deceitful tongue.

What does Psalms 120:2 mean?

A man surrounded by liars is already half destroyed, because deceit poisons the water that every judgment drinks from. Words are how we build the world we then have to live in, and a false word lays a rotten beam into that structure.

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical Psychology

A man surrounded by liars is already half destroyed, because deceit poisons the water that every judgment drinks from. Words are how we build the world we then have to live in, and a false word lays a rotten beam into that structure. No wonder the plea is desperate. Someone caught in a web of falsehood cannot find his footing anywhere.

The deceitful tongue harms the one who wields it most of all. Each lie commits the liar to defending a reality that was never there, until the whole architecture of his life becomes scaffolding around an absence. Honest speech gives a person solid ground beneath every step. The liar spends his strength holding up what will fall the moment he stops pushing.

Live Psalms 120:2 today

  1. Check whether you are still maintaining a version of something that is no longer accurate. Quietly correct it today, even if nobody would have caught it.
  2. Tell one person something true that you have been softening into something else. The relief is usually immediate and the conversation is usually shorter than you feared.
  3. When a tense thread or a meeting tempts you into a convenient half-truth, say the plain thing and take the awkward pause. One uncomfortable minute is cheaper than months of keeping a story upright.

What am I spending energy holding up that is not actually true?

The same truth in other traditions

Hinduism · satya

Truthfulness is held as a foundation of a sound life, because a person built on what is false has nothing firm underfoot. Living with reality is what makes standing possible.

Buddhism · false speech

The precept against lying is given not mainly to protect the hearer but to protect the mind of the speaker, which grows crooked keeping stories straight. Each untruth asks for another to hold it up.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

He wrote that the liar makes himself an enemy of the nature of things, since reality and truth are the same thing. Fighting reality is a fight nobody wins.
