EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

There is a peace in you that wants no conflict, and yet you find that your very presence can provoke hostility in others. This is not your failure. The ego in another feels most alive when it has an enemy, and stillness gives it nothing to push against, so it reaches for war.

You do not have to enter the fight. The conflict the other seeks needs two egos to sustain it, and if you remain present rather than reacting, there is nothing in you for it to grip. Their hunger for battle comes from a self that feeds on having an opponent, and staying at peace is the one response that starves it.

  1. Think of the person who always seems to want a fight with you, and let go of the running argument you rehearse in your head. The fight ends there first, before it ever ends with them.
  2. When someone comes at you edgy over text, answer the actual question and leave the jab alone. One calm sentence can end what three sharp ones would have fed for days.
  3. In a tense call or a heated family dinner, feel your feet on the floor and keep breathing slowly. Your steadiness is not surrender, it is simply the absence of fuel.

When I refuse a fight, am I staying calm, or just saving the argument for later in my head?
