Peace be within your walls, and prosperity within your palaces.

What does Psalms 122:7 mean?

A pilgrim reaches the gate of the city and speaks a blessing not over its towers or its markets but over what is held inside the walls. The deepest hope turns inward, toward the quiet ground beneath all the coming and going.

Ego v. Being

A pilgrim reaches the gate of the city and speaks a blessing not over its towers or its markets but over what is held inside the walls. The deepest hope turns inward, toward the quiet ground beneath all the coming and going.

Everyone has an outer life that others can see, the busy rooms and grand halls of a person. Below them lies a stillness the day's noise never reaches, and when peace settles there, in the walls no one else enters, the whole house grows well. The rooms may stay crowded and loud. Yet the one who lives in them rests. Peace within the walls means calm at the center, and from that calm everything a person builds finally holds together.

  1. Before you open your phone in the morning, sit for two minutes with no input at all and let the quiet part of you wake up first. The day gets built on whatever you start from.
  2. At dinner or on a walk with someone, let a pause sit without rushing to fill it. The calm in you gives the other person somewhere to settle too.
  3. On a day when the work is loud and nothing stops coming, step away for one minute and stand somewhere still, even a stairwell. The rooms stay crowded, but you do not have to live out in them.

How much of my day is spent decorating the rooms other people see, and how long since I stood in the quiet part of the house?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching 11

A room is useful because of the empty space in it, not the walls. What is hollow and quiet at the center is what makes the whole thing livable.

Hinduism · Upanishads

In the small space within the heart there is a stillness as wide as the sky. All that a person is rests on that.

Taoism · Zhuangzi

When the mind is made empty, the empty room fills with light. Clear the inside and clarity comes on its own.
