Children come as something received, not something achieved. A household is handed people it did not design, and the parents stand over them as caretakers of someone else's treasure rather than owners of a product.

That settles what raising them is for. Treat a child as a possession and the goal becomes a result the parents can display. Treat a child as entrusted and the goal becomes handing back a person who knows God, which is why the home is called a small church, where faith is caught in ordinary hours, in how people speak to each other when nothing important is happening.

Live Psalms 127:3 today

  1. Watch one of your kids, or anyone in your care, for a minute today without correcting anything. Just see who they already are.
  2. At dinner or in the car, ask a real question and let the answer be slow. The unimportant hours are where they learn what you believe.
  3. When they test you and you feel yourself tightening, remember they were handed to you, not built by you. Respond to the person, not to the embarrassment.

Are you raising the person in front of you, or the result you want to be able to show?

Nothing dear to you is owned, only lent. Love your people fully and hold them as things on loan, and love gets gentler instead of grasping.

The foolish farmer pulled at his young shoots to help them grow and killed them all. Tend the conditions and let the living thing become what it is.

A parent's deepest care is to wish the child free and well in their own right, not to hold them as an extension of yourself.
