Psalms 130:6 Meaning My Soul Longs for the Lord More

My soul longs for the Lord more than watchmen long for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning.

What does Psalms 130:6 mean?

There is a waiting full of anxiety, the mind straining toward a future that has not come, resenting the present for not yet being what it wants. But there is another kind, the alert stillness of one who watches for the dawn, completely awake and completely here.

Ego v. Being

There is a waiting full of anxiety, the mind straining toward a future that has not come, resenting the present for not yet being what it wants. But there is another kind, the alert stillness of one who watches for the dawn, completely awake and completely here.

This is not waiting for something to happen in time. It is the wakeful presence of attention itself, resting in the now with no agenda but to be aware. When you wait like this, you no longer seek the sacred somewhere ahead of you. You find it is already here, in the very alertness with which you watch.

Live Psalms 130:6 today

  1. Wake up tomorrow and stay in bed awake for one minute before reaching for your phone. Be alert with no agenda and see what that is actually like.
  2. Spend the first part of your next conversation just being present with the person, with no point you are steering toward. You will hear things you usually miss.
  3. In the grocery line or stuck in traffic, put the phone down and be fully awake to exactly where you are. The waiting is not the gap before your life, it is part of it.

If the peace I keep waiting for is in the waiting itself, what am I missing right now?

Zen

Fully awake with nothing to do, that is the whole thing. Awareness itself is what you were waiting for.

Taoism · Zhuangzi

The mind that is awake but not grasping reflects everything as it comes. It waits for nothing and misses nothing.

Hinduism · Upanishads

What you are searching for is the awareness doing the searching. It is nearer than anything you could find.
