Psalms 139:12 Meaning Even the Darkness Doesn’t Hide From You

even the darkness doesn’t hide from you, but the night shines as the day. The darkness is like light to you.

What does Psalms 139:12 mean?

There is a dimension in you to which nothing is hidden, and to it the night shines as the day. This is awareness, the still presence that watches every state pass through you.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

There is a dimension in you to which nothing is hidden, and to it the night shines as the day. This is awareness, the still presence that watches every state pass through you. It does not recoil from your dark moods or cling to your bright ones. To it they are alike, simply passing forms seen in the same clear light.

When you rest as this awareness rather than in its changing content, your painful nights lose their power to define you. You begin to see that darkness and light are experiences moving across you, while what you are remains the still space in which they appear and dissolve.

SUFISM

Sufism

The heart keeps a hidden room where it stores what it is ashamed of, believing the dark keeps it secret. Bringing that room into the open, owning it honestly, is what clears it, since nothing there was ever hidden anyway, and pretending only rusts the mirror further.

To the One who made both, night and day are the same brightness. There is no corner of a person, however buried, where that gaze is not already present, seeing it plainly and, seeing it, able to cleanse it.

AWARENESS

Indian Guru

Whatever is pushed into the basement of the mind goes on shining to the one who watches. Repression moves things out of the personality's sight, not out of consciousness, and what is refused keeps working from underneath.

The polished face shown at dinner and the thing that rises at three in the morning belong to the same man. Awareness makes no distinction between them, so there is nothing to be gained by hiding. Look at greed with the same steady attention given to prayer, and the division that made half of a life shameful dissolves.

  1. When a mood takes you today, say to yourself, a bad mood is here, rather than, I am a mess. One is passing weather, the other is a verdict.
  2. When someone snaps at you, let your first move be to see it rather than return it. Their storm is real and it is still not yours to carry.
  3. Before a stressful call or a hard email, take three slow breaths and feel the part of you that is simply watching, calm underneath the nerves. Then speak from there.

If your worst mood is weather, who is the sky?

Zen

Clouds come and clouds go, and the sky is not harmed by either. You are the sky, not the weather crossing it.

Buddhism

Feelings arise, stay a while, and pass. Watch them with an even gaze and they lose the power to run your life.

Everything you are living through is passing. The part of you that sees it pass is steadier than any of it.
