PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

Long before a person can think or choose, something in him is already being shaped in the dark. The ground of the mind works below all awareness, weaving together the pattern of who he will become. The conscious self arrives late and finds much of the work already done.

This hidden making is not lost. The deeper layer of the mind holds the whole plan, even the parts the waking person will never see. A man may feel he built himself by his own choices, yet the shape he starts from was laid down in a place he cannot reach. Instead of fearing what lies below his awareness, he can rely on it, because the same hidden ground that formed him keeps working to complete him.

  1. Think of something you are good at that you never decided to be good at. Let it remind you that you are not only your own invention.
  2. With a child or a younger friend, stop steering for an afternoon and watch who they already are. Your job is less to build them than to keep the light and water coming.
  3. When you are stuck on something and the deadline is close, sleep on it instead of grinding. Whatever works below your thinking has solved harder things than this while you were out.

What in you was already there before you had any say in it?

The same truth in other traditions

Taoism · Zhuangzi

Zhuangzi called the world a great forge and the maker a great smith, and said the shaping goes on without consulting the thing being shaped. You can trust the hand or fight it, but either way the form comes.

Hinduism · Chandogya Upanishad

Inside the great fruit is a tiny seed, and inside that seed is nothing you can see. Out of that invisible thing the whole tree comes. That unseen essence, the teacher says, is what you are.

Sufism · Rumi

Rumi traced the long road from mineral to plant to animal to human and said you were being prepared at every stage. You never remember the stage you came from, yet it made you.
