Psalms 140:13 Meaning Surely the Righteous Will Give Thanks

Surely the righteous will give thanks to your name. The upright will dwell in your presence.

What does Psalms 140:13 mean?

Gratitude is not something you manufacture by deciding to be thankful. It rises on its own the moment you become truly present, when you notice that life is happening now and you are here to meet it.

Ego v. Being

Gratitude is not something you manufacture by deciding to be thankful. It rises on its own the moment you become truly present, when you notice that life is happening now and you are here to meet it. The awakened heart gives thanks because it feels the aliveness of this moment.

To dwell in presence is to make your home in the Now rather than in the endless commentary of the mind. Those who live this way do not wait for a better moment to arrive. They are awake within this one, and being awake in the present is what it means to dwell in the presence of the sacred.

Live Psalms 140:13 today

  1. On your first coffee or glass of water today, put the phone face down and taste it. Three mouthfuls with your full attention is enough.
  2. Tell someone one specific thing you are glad about in them, not a general compliment. Something you actually saw them do this week.
  3. In a dull patch of the day, the commute, the line, the fifth meeting, look for one thing that is genuinely alright. Not a silver lining, just one small fact that is fine.

What good thing is already here that you have been waiting to deserve?

Zen

When you eat, just eat. When you walk, just walk. Thanks is what being fully in the ordinary feels like from the inside.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Do not spend this hour wishing for what is not here. Look at what is in front of you as if it had been given to you once only.

Judaism

There is a blessing for bread, for rain, for waking up. The practice is not to work up a feeling, it is to stop and see what you already have.
