CYBERNETICS

Cybernetics

A man who has stumbled often mistakes the fall for the final verdict on who he is. Yet something deeper in him does not accept that ruling. Beneath every failure runs a steadying force that catches the self before it hits bottom, the way a hand under the arm keeps a fainting patient from the floor. The failure is an event. The person is not the event.

When someone bowed low under old defeats stops rehearsing them, that lifting force does its quiet work. The mental picture straightens. Head rises, and the man walks as the person he was built to be.

  1. Tonight, when the replay of today's stumble starts, stop it after the first scene and say, that happened, it is not who I am. One sentence, as often as it takes.
  2. If someone near you is low about a mistake, resist the fix and tell them you still see them the same. People bowed down often need the view of them held steady by someone else before they can hold it themselves.
  3. After something goes wrong at work, walk back into the room with your head up anyway. Not pretending it was fine, just refusing to shrink into it.

Which recent fall have you quietly turned into a description of yourself?

Taoism · Tao Te Ching

What yields is not what breaks. The grass flattened by the storm stands up after, and the standing up is its nature, not its achievement.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Knocked down, get up again and go on with what you were doing. A fall is an event in a day, never a report on who you are.

Buddhism · Dhammapada

The mind creates what it keeps rehearsing. Stop rehearsing the defeat and the shape of the person you are stops being the shape of it.
