Tasbīḥ: The praise every created thing is already making The Quran says nothing exists that does not praise God, though people cannot make out how. Praise like that needs no one to organize it or keep it going. So a person turning toward God feels less like starting a song, more like joining one that was already going. The smallest living things are in it without training or effort, and without any idea that they are doing it.

Ghaflah: Heedlessness, going through the day without taking anything in The word names the dullness that settles over someone who sees everything and takes in none of it. Hurry and habit wear the attention smooth, until a hundred pointers to God pass by as one ordinary morning. The dullness usually lifts when a person stays with one thing longer than normal, and the same surroundings start to register.

Tafakkur: Thinking over made things until they point past themselves Al-Ghazali gives this a long treatment in the Revival: slow looking at made things until the mind crosses from the thing to its maker. Anyone who has looked closely at how a single creature is built knows the surprise and gratitude that arrive on their own. The slow look, held past the first glance, turns familiar ground into evidence of a giver.

Tajallī: God showing Himself through a particular form Ibn Arabi uses this for God stepping into view through one particular thing, and he holds that no showing ever repeats. Each kind carries something of God that no other kind carries, which makes the variety the point. A crowded, noisy world of living things becomes a spread of showings, each one saying what the others cannot. A person who takes that in stops ranking creatures by size or usefulness.

Fiṭra: The nature a creature is made with The Prophet said every child is born upon the fitra, the shape a creature comes with before anything covers it. Creatures below us never lose theirs; they do what they were made to do, and their praise is that and nothing more. People are the ones who wander off, so for them praise means returning to how they were made, a return that takes years.

Live Psalms 148:10 today

  1. Stay with one small living thing longer than normal today, an ant on the sidewalk, a bird on a wire, the dog asleep by your feet. Look past the first glance until something about it actually registers.
  2. Ask someone about an animal they loved or a creature they have watched closely. People open up fast about this, and you will hear something you did not know.
  3. When your morning gets rushed and everything blurs together, stop for five seconds at one thing you walked past yesterday without seeing. Hurry wears attention smooth, and standing still is how it comes back.

What did I look at today without seeing any of it?

The same truth in other traditions

Zhuangzi

Zhuangzi watches a butcher whose knife never dulls because he follows the natural grain rather than forcing it. The animals and the craftsman alike are praised for moving the way their nature moves.

Tao Te Ching 64

A tree a person can barely reach around began as the smallest sprout. The slow attention to small things is how anything real is seen or grown.

Buddhism

The teaching asks for goodwill toward all breathing beings, weak and strong, tiny and vast, with none ranked above another. Size and usefulness are not how worth is decided.
