Psalms 150:3 Meaning Praise Him with the Sounding

Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet! Praise him with harp and lyre!

What does Psalms 150:3 mean?

The instruments are the body sounding its own praise, breath and nerve tuned until the whole frame vibrates. The trumpet is the ram's horn, wind driven through a hollow channel, the same breath that moves up the spine and blows open the crown; it is the awakening blast that rouses the sleeper in the flesh.

The psaltery and harp are strung and plucked, the spinal cord and its ganglia struck like taut cords so tone travels the length of the body. Worship here is not a ceremony but a resonance: when the nerves are strung right and the breath moves clean, the body itself becomes the instrument, and the sound rising through it is the only real music.

Spirit does not descend from a far sky to be praised; it hums in the marrow when the channels are open. The high tone reached at the end of the ascent is the body finally in tune with itself.

Trumpet: the breath driven up the spinal channel to blow open the higher centers and wake the sleeper in the flesh Psaltery and harp: the spinal cord and its plucked nerve-strings, the body strung so that vibration runs its full length

Live Psalms 150:3 today

  1. Before your first screen of the day, take ten slow breaths that go all the way down and let your shoulders drop on each one out. Your mood follows your breathing far more than it follows your plans.
  2. Sing or hum something in the car or the kitchen with another person, badly and without apology. Sound moving through two bodies does something conversation cannot.
  3. In the middle of a tense call or a hard stretch of traffic, check where your breath is. If it has gone high and shallow, let the next three go lower, and your whole body changes key with it.

What does your breathing right now tell you about how you have been living today?
