Psalms 18:28 Meaning For You Will Light My Lamp

For you will light my lamp, Yahweh. My God will light up my darkness.

What does Psalms 18:28 mean?

Your darkness is not a punishment or a flaw to be ashamed of. It is simply the part of you that still lives unconsciously, the old reactions and fears that operate in you without your awareness, running like programs in the dark.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Your darkness is not a punishment or a flaw to be ashamed of. It is simply the part of you that still lives unconsciously, the old reactions and fears that operate in you without your awareness, running like programs in the dark.

The light that ends this darkness is awareness itself. You do not defeat unconsciousness by fighting it; you dissolve it by bringing the light of presence to it, the way a candle fills a dark room without any struggle. When you become conscious of a pattern hidden in you, it loses its power, because a reaction you can observe is no longer running you from the dark.

PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

A person cannot light his own inner darkness just by trying harder. The mind's effort cannot reach the places where it is most in the dark, because those places are exactly what it cannot see.

Light of that kind arrives more like a gift, from a level deeper than the will, at a moment nobody chose. It is as if a lamp were lit in a room whose door could not be found. When the dark corners of a life begin to make sense at last, it is not because a person forced them to. Something within has turned his way and let him see what was always there.

SUFISM

Sufism

Pride wants to be its own light, to have earned its clarity and to owe it to no one. Admitting the lamp was never self-kindled is what mends this: a person who tries to shine on their own runs out of oil, while the one who lets the flame be lit stays lit.

The promise is that the dark places will be reached, the ones a person cannot brighten from inside. The lamp is theirs, but the fire is a gift, and the light that will fill their night is the same light that first made it burn.

  1. The next time a mood lands on you at home, name it quietly to yourself before you reach for your phone. Just "this is irritation" or "this is worry," and then let it be there while you keep doing the dishes.
  2. When someone says the thing that always gets you, the sibling line, the tone from your partner, watch your own reaction come up before you answer. You can still answer, but you will be answering instead of firing.
  3. In a tense meeting or a long traffic jam, look for the familiar story your head is telling you, something like "nobody respects me" or "I am going to be late and it will be a disaster." Seeing it as a story, not a fact, takes the heat out of it.

What reaction in you tends to run before you ever get to see it?

Zen

A lamp is not asked to argue with the dark. It is only lit, and the room is simply different.

When anger rises, know clearly: anger has risen. Seeing the state plainly is what loosens its hold, not wrestling with it.

Stoicism · Epictetus

We are not disturbed by events but by our opinions about them, and most of those opinions run unexamined. Drag one into the light and look at it, and it stops governing you.
