Psalms 22:14 Meaning I Am Poured Out Like Water

I am poured out like water. All my bones are out of joint. My heart is like wax. It is melted within me.

What does Psalms 22:14 mean?

There are moments when everything you have held yourself together with comes undone. You feel poured out like water, your very structure dissolving, and the mind cries that you are being destroyed.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

There are moments when everything you have held yourself together with comes undone. You feel poured out like water, your very structure dissolving, and the mind cries that you are being destroyed. But what is dissolving is only the hardened shell you mistook for yourself.

This melting is not your ending. When you stop resisting the collapse and let yourself be undone, you notice that something remains awake through all of it, the awareness quietly watching the pain. That watching presence is what you truly are, and it cannot be poured out or broken. This is why such suffering, unbearable as it feels, can become the doorway to who you really are.

SUFISM

Sufism

Everything solid in him has gone soft, the frame come apart, the heart run to wax. The heart's temptation in such collapse is despair, the sense that being undone is the same as being abandoned, and that a melted self is simply lost.

The cure is to let the melting be a giving rather than a defeat, to pour out the complaint toward God instead of sealing it in bitterness. Wax only takes a new shape once the old form yields to the flame. Even poured out on the ground, the person is held, God present in the very heat that is loosening what was too rigid to bless.

  1. If you fall apart tonight, let it happen without reaching for a distraction. Sit on the edge of the bed, feel it move through your chest and your breathing, and see that you are still here watching it.
  2. When a friend is coming undone in front of you, resist the urge to patch them up. Stay, keep breathing, and let them be a mess with someone who is not frightened by it.
  3. In the middle of a hard call or a day that is coming apart at work, drop your shoulders and let your body go soft instead of bracing. Being undone and being destroyed are not the same thing.

What part of you are you holding rigid because you are afraid of what happens if it softens?

Tao Te Ching

Water has no shape of its own, and that is why nothing can break it. What is soft and yielding outlasts what is rigid.

Sufism · Rumi

The wound is where the light reaches you. Rumi kept returning to this: what cracks a person open also lets something in.

Buddhism

Clinging to a fixed, solid self is the root of suffering. When that solidity comes apart, what is lost was never the real ground you were standing on.
