Ego v. Being

There is a knowing the grasping mind can never reach. It is not information, and no amount of thinking will produce it. It opens only in those who hold reverence, who feel the vastness in which their small life unfolds and grow quiet before it.

In that stillness, something is revealed that was always present but unheard beneath the noise. This is the secret, the intimacy with the source of life the old ones called the covenant. It comes to the humble rather than the clever, because reverence makes a person quiet, and only a quiet mind is open enough to receive it.

  1. Stand outside tonight for a few minutes with your phone in your pocket and just look up. Let yourself feel small without needing to make anything of it.
  2. The next time someone tells you something that matters to them, resist the urge to explain it back to them. Just let it land, and let the silence after it be a little longer than is comfortable.
  3. When you hit a problem you cannot think your way through, stop thinking about it for an hour on purpose. The answer that comes later tends to arrive when you have stopped squeezing.

When was the last time you let yourself be quiet long enough to hear anything?
