Psalms 25:16 Meaning Turn to Me

Turn to me, and have mercy on me, for I am desolate and afflicted.

What does Psalms 25:16 mean?

A man who feels cut off carries a picture of himself as forgotten, standing outside every warm room. The old wounds tell him he is alone, and the mechanism inside him, obedient as always, steers by that lonely portrait and keeps him lonely.

Cybernetics

A man who feels cut off carries a picture of himself as forgotten, standing outside every warm room. The old wounds tell him he is alone, and the mechanism inside him, obedient as always, steers by that lonely portrait and keeps him lonely. So the plea is not for the world to change first. It asks that the face of mercy turn back toward him, that some steadier presence look his way again and answer the isolation he has lived inside.

When that turning is felt, the desolation loses its grip. A person who believed he was abandoned begins to hold himself as someone worth returning to. The affliction does not vanish by force. It eases because the self is no longer facing an empty wall, and the machinery that once tracked loneliness now tracks a mercy that has drawn near.

  1. If you are the kind of lonely where you scroll instead of reaching out, put the phone face down and say one honest sentence about yourself with no insult in it. You are talking to someone worth turning toward.
  2. Send a message to someone you assume has forgotten you. Not a test, not a hint, just hello and that you were thinking of them. The story that nobody is coming only holds while nobody is asked.
  3. When a group chat lights up and you feel like the one outside the warm room, answer anyway, one short real thing. Standing at the wall is a habit, not a fact.

Where are you living as if you were already left out?

Rumi

The wound is the place where the light enters. The ache itself is the opening that turns toward mercy.

Buddhism · metta practice

The first person you offer kindness to is yourself. Until the heart turns back toward its own face, it has nothing to give anyone else.

Pirkei Avot

Do not judge yourself as cut off from the whole. The one who thinks they stand outside the room has forgotten they were counted in it.
