EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

To be meek is not to be weak. It is to be free of the loud, defended self that already believes it knows. The ego cannot be taught, because it must always be right. It argues with what is and calls this arguing intelligence.

When that inner clamor grows quiet, a deeper knowing can reach you. This is what it means to be guided. Not a voice from far away, but the clear seeing that arises when you stop resisting the present moment. The humble are taught because they have made room to listen.

SUFISM

Sufism

Water only runs downhill, and that is the trouble with a proud heart: it sits too high on its own opinion for anything to reach it. The cure is small. A person can quietly admit, where no one sees, that he was wrong and did not know, and feel a door open.

Then the teaching is already there, the way a valley fills with light once it stops shading itself. The one asking here is a king, yet even he goes low first. God does not stand off and give orders. He bends close, and the lowness that empties the heart is the cup He fills.

Live Psalms 25:9 today

  1. Today, when you catch yourself certain about something small, let yourself wonder for a second whether you might be wrong. Hold the certainty a little more loosely and see what else shows up.
  2. In your next conversation, let the other person finish completely before you speak, including the pause. You will hear something you would have talked over.
  3. When a group chat or an email thread gets you ready to set someone straight, wait before you send. Reread what they actually wrote rather than the version your head made of it.

Where is your need to be right costing you something you could have learned?

The one who does not insist on being right is the one everyone can learn from. Empty space is what lets anything new in.
