Psalms 27:13 Meaning I Am Still Confident of This

I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of Yahweh in the land of the living.

What does Psalms 27:13 mean?

Confidence that waits for proof arrives too late to create any, because action flows from what a person already holds as settled. Holding something as settled before it has happened is what lets a person move at all: the belief sets the state, the state sets which emotions are available, and emotion decides whether they keep standing or leave the field.

Confidence that waits for proof arrives too late to create any, because action flows from what a person already holds as settled.

Holding something as settled before it has happened is what lets a person move at all: the belief sets the state, the state sets which emotions are available, and emotion decides whether they keep standing or leave the field. Waiting to feel sure until the goodness of Yahweh has already shown itself keeps a man acting small, and small results then arrive looking like reasons for the waiting.

What was held here concerned the land of the living, present tense, not a comfort deferred to safer ground. Drop that, and a person starts acting at the level of their doubt, and the doubt goes to work manufacturing the evidence that proves it right.

Live Psalms 27:13 today

  1. Start the thing you have been waiting to feel ready for, in the smallest possible version, today, before any sign shows up that you were right to try.
  2. Say something encouraging to one person about where they are headed, and mean it, rather than waiting to see if it works out for them first.
  3. When a day goes badly and you start concluding that nothing good is coming, go looking for one real good thing in the last week before you let that conclusion stand.

Where am I acting small because I am waiting for proof that would only come if I acted?

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Your life takes the color of your thoughts long before the facts come in. A person who expects nothing good tends to behave in ways that make sure of it.

Zen

Step onto the path before you can see where it ends, because the view only opens to the one walking. Waiting at the trailhead for certainty is how you stay at the trailhead.

Sufism

The seeker is already answered in the wanting, and the asking itself is the first sign. Trust comes first, the proof follows after.
