Psalms 31:20 Meaning In the Shelter of Your Presence You

In the shelter of your presence you will hide them from the plotting of man. You will keep them secretly in a dwelling away from the strife of tongues.

What does Psalms 31:20 mean?

There is a refuge within you that no insult can reach and no quarrel can disturb. It is the secret of presence, the still awareness underneath your thoughts, and when you live from there, the pride and provocation of others pass through without finding anything to grip.

Ego v. Being

There is a refuge within you that no insult can reach and no quarrel can disturb. It is the secret of presence, the still awareness underneath your thoughts, and when you live from there, the pride and provocation of others pass through without finding anything to grip.

The strife of tongues, all the judging and arguing of the world, wounds only the ego, the fragile self-image that needs to win. Step back into presence and you are no longer that image. The noise continues around you, but it can no longer touch the one who stays quietly aware behind it all.

ESOTERIC

Esoteric

There is a hidden chamber in the self, a still interior where the higher presence dwells untouched by the clamor outside, and the faculties are drawn into it for safekeeping. The pride of man is the ego's loud self-assertion and the strife of tongues is the endless argument of the lower mind, both of them left at the threshold. To be hidden in the secret of the presence is to withdraw the awareness inward, below thought, into the ground where the I AM rests. The retreat is not to a far country but downward and inward, into the quiet that noise cannot enter.

What reads as shelter from enemies is the retreat a person makes into his own silent center, where the outer turmoil simply cannot reach him.

The pavilion: the inner sanctuary, the quiet tent of consciousness pitched deep within the body where the noise of the world does not enter.

SUFISM

Sufism

The danger named is the strife of tongues, the wounding talk of others, and the temptation is to armor up, to plot back and win the quarrel. That counter-scheming is the real fault, the wounded pride that must answer every jab. The cure is to step out of the fight into a quieter shelter, letting some words go unanswered rather than feeding the noise.

And that shelter is not a far-off place but a nearness. The presence itself is the hiding place, so to be kept safe is simply to be close, tucked in like warmth inside a lit room.
