CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical Psychology

Strength does not arrive first and courage second. You act with courage while you are still afraid, and the strengthening comes to meet the act. Hope is what makes this possible, because a man who believes his effort points somewhere can endure what would otherwise crush him. Despair drains the heart. Hope steadies it.

To hope in the Lord is to trust that the structure of reality rewards the one who faces things honestly. That trust is not passive. It carries a person into the first hard step. A man who moves toward what frightens him finds the strength he lacked beginning to build.

CYBERNETICS

Cybernetics

Courage comes first, and the steadying of the heart follows it. A person who acts with a brave bearing, even before the feeling arrives, finds that the machinery inside begins to fall in line behind the picture. The heart takes its cue from the stance a person holds.

Hope does the same quiet work. When someone leans on a steadfast ground larger than the moment, the inner mechanism stops bracing against every shadow and settles into its natural aim. Fear tightens; trust loosens. The strength here is promised to those who keep hoping, and it arrives in the wake of that hope, not ahead of it. A heart held toward something reliable grows firm because it has stopped fighting itself.

  1. Make the call or send the message you have been avoiding for days, before you feel ready. Readiness shows up afterward.
  2. Tell one person the honest thing you have been managing around, in plain words, and let the conversation be awkward.
  3. When something at work or home goes wrong and your instinct is to go quiet and hide, speak up first instead. The dread is worse than the doing.

What have I been waiting to feel strong enough for, when the strength only comes after I move?
