Psalms 34:4 Meaning I Sought Yahweh

I sought Yahweh, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears.

What does Psalms 34:4 mean?

Fear rarely leaves through direct combat, which only fixes the mind harder on the thing feared. Here a person turns the whole of his attention toward something larger than the fear, and in that turning the grip breaks.

Cybernetics

Fear rarely leaves through direct combat, which only fixes the mind harder on the thing feared. Here a person turns the whole of his attention toward something larger than the fear, and in that turning the grip breaks. The deliverance follows the seeking, as though the mind cannot hold dread and trust in the same frame for long.

All his fears go at once. They shared a single root: a self-image too small for what it faced. When a man reaches past himself and is met, the picture enlarges, and the old alarms have nothing left to grip. The relief lasts because the inner image, not merely the circumstance, has changed.

Live Psalms 34:4 today

  1. When the worry loop starts on your commute, stop arguing with it and put your attention on something bigger instead: the sky, the people around you, what you actually care about.
  2. Tell one person the fear out loud today. Not for advice, just so it stops living only inside your head where it can grow.
  3. Before the meeting or the hard call, take thirty seconds and remember that you are part of something wider than this one outcome. Then walk in.

Which of my fears would shrink if I stopped staring straight at it?

Tao Te Ching 16

Return to stillness and the churning settles by itself. You do not wrestle muddy water clear, you let it stand.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Turn your attention to the whole of things and your own troubles shrink to their real size. The fear was partly a matter of scale.

Bhagavad Gita 2

The one who rests attention on the imperishable stops trembling at what passes. Fear loosens when the self you are defending gets larger.
