Psalms 39:3 · World English Bible
My heart was hot within me. While I meditated, the fire burned. I spoke with my tongue:
Something held down too long finally catches. The trouble is not the fire but the swallowing, the silence kept out of pride or fear that lets a grief or a grievance smolder unspoken until it scorches from inside.
From the Sufism reading below.
The same verse, read by one tradition.

SUFISM
Something held down too long finally catches. The trouble is not the fire but the swallowing, the silence kept out of pride or fear that lets a grief or a grievance smolder unspoken until it scorches from inside.
The cure arrives in the last clause, when the burning becomes speech: the pressure that was eating the heart is carried out through honest words instead of festering in the dark. A sealed pot boils over; an open one lets off steam. And the fire itself is a kind of visitation, God present in the heat that will not let the matter stay buried.
Sufism lens
What have I been swallowing lately, and who could I say it to this week?
Seneca wrote that grief kept wholly secret grows heavier, while sorrow spoken to a trusted friend begins to be carried rather than hidden. Concealment does not reduce the weight, it only hides it.
The sages said that when a man has worry in his heart he should speak it out to others, because the thing held in silence keeps working on him. Saying it is what lightens it.
