Psalms 40:10 · World English Bible

Psalms 40:10 Meaning I Have Not Hidden Your Righteousness Within

I have not hidden your righteousness within my heart. I have declared your faithfulness and your salvation. I have not concealed your loving kindness and your truth from the great assembly.

What does Psalms 40:10 mean?

There is a quieter fault than lying, which is keeping a good thing to oneself, hoarding the mercy received as a private treasure. A heart can grow secretive even about kindness, guarding the story of its rescue the way a miser guards coins.

There is a quieter fault than lying, which is keeping a good thing to oneself, hoarding the mercy received as a private treasure. A heart can grow secretive even about kindness, guarding the story of its rescue the way a miser guards coins.

The cure is here in the doing: to say it out loud in the crowd, letting the gift move through instead of stopping in one chest. A spring that dams its own water goes stale. God is present as the faithfulness being spoken, passing from the One who gave it, through the grateful voice, into the whole gathered room.

Live Psalms 40:10 today

  1. Write down the plain account of a good thing that happened to you recently, the one you have been keeping private. Seeing it in your own words makes it easier to say out loud.
  2. Tell a friend the specific thing someone did for you, not the vague grateful version. Naming it passes some of it to them.
  3. When a group chat or a work conversation turns to how bad everything is, say one true good thing without arguing against anyone. Not to correct the mood, just so the good thing gets into the room.

What good thing have I been keeping to myself, and who should hear it?

Tao Te Ching 8

Water benefits everything because it does not hold itself back, and its goodness lies in moving on rather than pooling. What is kept for itself goes stagnant.

Talmud

The sages said a man who has learned and does not pass it on withholds kindness, since the teaching was given to him to hand on. The receiving is completed by the giving.

Bhagavad Gita 3

Krishna says the one who takes the gifts of the world and gives nothing back is a thief, while action offered outward keeps the whole turning. What is held for oneself alone is taken, not received.
