Psalms 40:8 Meaning I Delight to Do Your Will

I delight to do your will, my God. Yes, your law is within my heart.

What does Psalms 40:8 mean?

To delight in doing the will of God is to find the joy that comes when you stop resisting life and begin to move in alignment with it. The ego wants its own way and suffers in the friction of that wanting.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

To delight in doing the will of God is to find the joy that comes when you stop resisting life and begin to move in alignment with it. The ego wants its own way and suffers in the friction of that wanting. When you surrender to what this moment asks, action flows without struggle, and a quiet joy is in it.

This will is not a command imposed from outside. It is written within, in the depth of your Being beneath the noise of thought. Grow still enough to feel it, and you discover that doing what life asks and being true to your own nature are the same. That is why it brings delight and not burden.

SELF-HELP

Self-Help

When a standard moves from the rulebook into the heart, obedience stops costing energy and starts producing it.

A command held outside a person requires policing, and policing generates resistance, and resistance shows up in the work as delay, half measures, and the daily argument about whether to begin. The same command placed inside stops competing with what the person wants and becomes what the person wants.

Delight is the tell that the transfer has happened, because nobody negotiates with an appetite. God's law written internally means the decision got made once instead of every morning. A person still obeying from the outside spends most of their strength on the argument and brings what is left to the work.

Live Psalms 40:8 today

  1. Do one ordinary chore today, dishes, laundry, the walk to the car, with your whole attention and nothing playing in your ears. See whether the resistance to it was the heavier part.
  2. Help someone with something small without being asked and without mentioning it afterward. Feel how different that is from doing it for credit.
  3. When the next task comes in and you feel yourself bracing against it, drop the arguing and just begin. Most of the weight was the fight, not the work.

Which part of today's resistance is the task, and which part is just you arguing with it?

Act without contriving and nothing is left undone. Move with the grain of things and the work carries itself.

Hinduism · Bhagavad Gita 3

It is better to do your own work imperfectly than someone else's well. What is yours to do is already written in you.

Chop wood, carry water. When you are wholly in the task, the task stops being a burden.
