Psalms 42:4 · World English Bible

Psalms 42:4 Meaning These Things I Remember

These things I remember, and pour out my soul within me, how I used to go with the crowd, and led them to God’s house, with the voice of joy and praise, a multitude keeping a holy day.

What does Psalms 42:4 mean?

Remembering is the whole work here. The soul thirsting for an experience of God is answered not by waiting but by an inward return to a scene of joy, entered so fully that it is felt as present again.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

Remembering is the whole work here. The soul thirsting for an experience of God is answered not by waiting but by an inward return to a scene of joy, entered so fully that it is felt as present again. Going with the multitude to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, is that inner consultation with a remembered gladness, revisited until the feeling of it fills the man now.

The house of God is not a building but the state a person enters when he communes within. What is recalled with feeling is lived from, and a scene held vividly and joyfully in imagination changes the facts that follow it. This is why the soul pours itself out in remembrance. The state relived in gladness becomes the state a person moves into.

CYBERNETICS

Cybernetics

A man far from home returns to a scene of joy the only way left to him, inside his own memory. The crowd, the singing, the glad procession to the house of God rise up again in vivid detail, and his whole soul spills over at the sight. The picture is that alive.

A remembered experience can act on a person this deeply. What the mind pictures in full color, the body answers as though it were happening. The joy he once lived becomes the thing that keeps him from drowning in the present grief.

Live Psalms 42:4 today

  1. Pull up one evening you were genuinely glad, not the photo of it, the feeling of it, and stay there until your face changes. That is the state you then carry into the rest of the day.
  2. At dinner or on a call, ask someone to tell you about a day they loved, and listen until you can feel it too. Shared gladness is the easiest door into this one.
  3. When the day turns heavy, a bad commute, a tense thread, a long line, go back to a scene of real joy and live in it for one minute instead of replaying the trouble. What you relive with feeling is what you move into next.

Which remembered gladness could you live from today instead of just looking back at?

Bhagavad Gita 8

Whatever state a person dwells in with full feeling at the end, that is the state they go into. Where the mind rests is where the person arrives.

Socrates argues that what we call learning is recollection, the soul recovering what it already holds. Nothing is fetched from outside, it is remembered into view.

In the opening of the Masnavi the reed cries because it remembers the reed bed it was cut from. The remembering is what makes the music.
