Psalms 44:1 Meaning We Have Heard with Our Ears

We have heard with our ears, God; our fathers have told us what work you did in their days, in the days of old.

Cybernetics

A self-image can be built from stories a person never lived. What the fathers told, heard and held, becomes stock in the imagination as surely as firsthand memory. The mind does not sort borrowed evidence from earned evidence; it works from whatever it stores, and inherited accounts of help arriving shape what the inner mechanism expects.

That is why the telling mattered so much. Passed from one generation to the next, the old works stayed alive as a picture the young could stand on. Their confidence rested on a rescue they had only heard described.

Live Psalms 44:1 today

  1. Write down one story from your family about a hard time that turned out all right, in a few plain sentences, so it stops being vague. Give your mind something concrete to stand on.
  2. Ask an older relative to tell you about a stretch when they did not know how it would work out. Listen for how it resolved, not just how hard it was.
  3. When something at work looks unsurvivable, remember someone you know who got through the same shape of trouble. Their account counts as evidence for you too.

Whose story am I standing on without ever having thanked them for it?
