Psalms 48:2 Meaning Beautiful in Elevation

Beautiful in elevation, the joy of the whole earth, is Mount Zion, on the north sides, the city of the great King.

What does Psalms 48:2 mean?

God is beautiful and He loves beauty: beauty belongs to Him first A saying of the Prophet, and Sufis take it at face value. When something lovely stops a person in their tracks, the loveliness did not start with the thing itself; it is on loan.

God is beautiful and He loves beauty: beauty belongs to Him first A saying of the Prophet, and Sufis take it at face value. When something lovely stops a person in their tracks, the loveliness did not start with the thing itself; it is on loan. That is why praise rises so easily in front of it, and why the thanks tends to travel past the object toward wherever the beauty came from.

Malakūt: the unseen side of things Al-Ghazali's word for what the visible world stands in front of. He compared what you can see to a window: a person can stop at the glass, or look through it to what is behind. When a splendid sight lifts someone, that lift is the start of looking through, and the heart keeps going up without being told to.

Jalāl: God's majesty, the side that makes a person feel small The overwhelming face of God. Standing in front of something vast does something to a person: talk dries up, plans shrink, and the worries carried in the door lose their weight. Sufis found that the shrinking feels like relief rather than defeat, because awe takes the load off and a person stops trying to be the biggest thing in the room.

Uns: warm ease in God's nearness The settled gladness of being close to God. For most people, fear of God comes first, and Sufis describe a turn where that same nearness stops frightening and starts feeling like home. The mood shifts from standing at attention to sitting down at a familiar table. Gladness of that kind spreads outward, and people around it catch it without knowing why.

My earth and My heaven cannot hold Me, but the heart of My believing servant holds Me: God's dwelling is a heart Sufis repeat these words as God's own speech. Honored places keep their honor, and the tradition never argues with that, but the deeper honor gets handed to something a person carries everywhere. Someone far from every famous site is not shut out, because the place where God is met goes with them.

Live Psalms 48:2 today

  1. Find one genuinely beautiful thing today and stay with it thirty seconds longer than feels natural. A sky, a tree, a face, a piece of music. Don't photograph it. Just let it do its work on you.
  2. When something lovely stops you and someone is nearby, say so out loud. Shared gladness spreads, and the person next to you will catch it without quite knowing why.
  3. On a day where you are carrying too much, step outside and look at something larger than your problem. The worries you walked out with lose weight, and you stop trying to be the biggest thing in the room.

When something beautiful stopped you lately, where did your thanks go?

To study the way is to study the self, and in the presence of what is vast the self drops away; that dropping is the point, not an interruption of it.

What is great does not advertise itself; it simply is, and standing near it rearranges your sense of your own size.
