Ego v. Being

The self is forever seeking shelter in things that cannot last, in achievements, in people, in the shifting circumstances of its life. Here the longing turns toward a dwelling that does not change. To abide forever is to make your home not in any form but in presence itself, the awareness that was here before your troubles and remains beneath them.

To trust in the shelter of the wings is to let go of the ceaseless self-protection of the mind. When you rest in that inner stillness, you discover a refuge that no loss can take from you, because it was never a thing you could lose. It is what you are, and so you are always already home.

  1. When a plan falls apart or a number comes in lower than you hoped, sit still for one minute before you react. Find the part of you that is watching the disappointment and is not the disappointment.
  2. When someone's approval or silence sends you spinning, place a hand on your chest and breathe. You do not need them to steady you today, you already have somewhere to stand.
  3. Before a meeting or hard call, take ten seconds in the hallway or the car to feel yourself breathing. Walk in from that quiet instead of from the rehearsal in your head.
