Psalms 63:2 Meaning So I Have Seen You

So I have seen you in the sanctuary, watching your power and your glory.

What does Psalms 63:2 mean?

A man far from the holy place remembers seeing God there, and the memory itself is what sustains him in the dry land. The danger is a heart that only worships when the setting is beautiful, that needs the sanctuary and forgets the One the sanctuary was for.

Sufism

A man far from the holy place remembers seeing God there, and the memory itself is what sustains him in the dry land. The danger is a heart that only worships when the setting is beautiful, that needs the sanctuary and forgets the One the sanctuary was for. The cure is to carry the sight inward, to seek in the desert the same face once glimpsed in the courts.

The glory was never trapped in a building. Every place becomes a sanctuary where a heart turns to look, and the One seen in power there is present still, meeting the longing that keeps its gaze fixed even in the wilderness.

Live Psalms 63:2 today

  1. Think of one time you felt genuinely close to God, where you were, what it was like. Hold that for a minute today without needing to get back to that place.
  2. Treat somewhere plain as if it counted: the car in the parking lot before you go in, the ten minutes while the kettle boils, the walk from the train. Turn your attention there the way you would somewhere beautiful.
  3. On a hard commute or in a draining meeting, when you feel furthest from anything good, say quietly that this room counts too. Then stay in it without waiting for better conditions.

Am I waiting for the right setting before I bother to look?

The same truth in other traditions

Zen · the Gateless Gate

A student asked what the way is and the teacher said, ordinary mind is the way. The thing you were looking for in a special place is in the kitchen and the hallway.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

He wrote that people look for retreats in the countryside or by the sea when they could step into themselves at any moment. The quiet place is portable, and it is always open.

Taoism · Chuang Tzu

He found the way in a butcher's hands and a woodcarver's work, not in ceremony. If it is only present where the setting is beautiful, it was the setting you loved.
